Known alternately as Mallorca and Majorca, this holiday destination is one of the most popular of the Spanish Balearic Islands. Having been occupied for thousands of years, Majorca has since seen Roman, Vandal, Byzantine, Muslim, Moorish, Catalan, Aragonese and finally unified Spanish occupiers. Palma de Mallorca, the island's capital, has long been popular with tourists, having some of the regions most beautiful beaches and a large and sprawling marina area. Castell de Bellver and its museum, Catedral de Mallorca, Banys Arabs, Pueblo Espanol and Placa del Mercat are among the sights that attract visitors to the city, though the destination is also renowned for its restaurants, clubs and bars. Other areas of interest include the town of Playa de Palma, the village of Valldemossa, the mountain location of Soller and the Serra de Tramuntana region.
Majorca is serviced by the Son Sant Joan Airport, otherwise known as the Palma de Mallorca International Airport, and is one of the busiest airports in Spain. Being visited by well over twenty million passengers annually on flights with airberlin, British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, First Choice, Thomas Cook and Futura, amongst others. Palma de Mallorca is also a major ferry port, with services from Denia, Barcelona, Valencia, Mahon and Elvissa. In the north of the island, Alcudia also receives ferry visits from Barcelona and Ciutadella. Car hire is easily found at the airport and major ports, as well as in the urban centres. Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Auriga Crown, National-Atesa, Sixt and Record Rent-a-car are amongst the companies based on the island.
